How do I apply compost to my garden? New garden beds take a 3-4 inch layer of compost on the soil’s surface. You may also add other amendments at this time if needed, but this step is not always necessary. Next, using a shovel, spade, digging fork, rototiller or garden tool of your choice, mix and incorporate the top 8-12 inches of soil with the applied compost.
